Dear Everyone and All,

I have recently had an attempted break-in at my house. They did not manage to break in, but I have realised that my door with a single lock is perhaps not up to scratch. I really can't afford to install a new door (with the 9 locking latches all round) but wondered if there were locks on the market which I could install at the top and bottom of the door. These locks would only be accessible from the inside of the house. My back door has the multiple locking system and is very strong, so when I wanted to use those locks on the front door, I would lock up from the inside and then go out the back.

Any ideas?

All the best,

Allan

do you mean you have a plastic door? What sort of lock have you currently got? Is there glass in the door? Is there a letterbox? Where?

post a photo of the current locking mechanism and the edge of the door

If it is a wooden door, then Hertsdrainage is right. Wooden doors are stronger than plastic doors. Plastic doors are festooned with additional hooks and devices to try to partially make up for their inherent weakness.

The ‘star’ or mortice bolts top and bottom is the right solution, cheap and easy. Although fitting can be a challenge a ‘multi-point lock’ can be fitted to a timber door but talk to an ironmonger first as they are specialist bits of kit. Alternately fit an extra deadlock, 1 high and 1 low on the door. Use a BS 3621 though as it complies with Insurance requirements, try doorchic.co.uk
