This question relates to my vintage car but I hope somebody will be able to advise me. I am replacing the fabric section of roof and have removed all the old stuff, however I need to clean up the perimeter of the roof section prior to glue and screw new leather cloth into place. The old leather cloth has been left glued in some sections of this perimeter, its likely to be at least 40 years old and I have no idea what the adhesive used was. All I can say is it is very strong and it is bonded to the steel section of roof. Suggestions appreciated.

40 years ago, the most familiar glues were Evo Stik impact and scotch animal glue.....
For the former, try a petroleum based solvent, such as carburettor cleaner (toluene) or even paint thinner such as Xylene or cellulose...small quantities of course!
If its scotch glue, this was soluable in very hot water or steam. Maybe a Practical Classics mag or person could advise you better.
John :)
