When lifting the handle of my door the mortice lock does not engage smoothly, one has to physically lift the door slightly; it's worse in the hot weather. I've been told that by adjusting screws (with an Allen key) in the hinges this will cure the problem? I've located the adjusters (if that's the word) in the hinges but berore I start do I turn the Allen key clockwise or anti-clockwise?

try it and see
Stick a finger in-between the hinge and the door whilst turning the screw - you'll feel if the door is moving in or out.
