I would be grateful for some advice on a new door opening we would like to make between the dining room and living room.

The wall is a standard stud wall. We have received various quotes for the job and they seem to include different things namely 1 which includes a lintel, 2 that don't mention any lintels just a door lining and 1 which doesn't mention anything specific but when questioned talks about a double timber frame?

I am unfortunately too ignorant on the matter to know what is really required or if they are all talking about the same thing but just using a different terminology.:?

Would you be kind enough to enlighten me!

Many thanks.

A stud wall opening would require trimming out vertically with single, similar sized timbers to existing and then horizontally trimmed with a single timber to suit the door head height.

There would be no need for double trimmers of any kind.

The plasterboard and any redundant studs could be cut and removed.

If these builders were aware that the wall was a timber stud, then I'd be wary if any of them mentioned a lintel being required ... its either inexperience or them saying this to imply more work and more cost

It's a simple job, but it is essential that new timbers are inserted around the opening (within the wall) to form a rigid frame for the door casing. There may be one of the existing timbers in the right place and this could be used, but the timbers forming the side of the opening really need to go from floor to ceiling and be fixed at top and bottom too

It can be done by just cutting the plasterboard, but you would expect to see a row of screw heads vertically going all the way up to the ceiling. These would be filled in afterwards, but it will show that the work has been most likely been done properly
