randomly tripping even with all appliances unplugged

That doesn't necessarily mean it's faulty. More likely you have a fault on your wiring.

Went to an RCD fault today where 'everything was unplugged'. Found their dog had chewed the flex on an extension lead under the cupboards that was still plugged in

Still more likely that it is doing its job and telling you there is a fault.

Either way, it needs investigating.

Are there any outside items that may be wet or recent work that may have done some damage or a heating appliance not able to be unplugged?

Its funny how everybody blames the RCD if it is tripping. As above, it is doing its job.

As EFLI says, it can be tested, as can the circuits - this will tell you what is causing it. The type of equipment needed isn't the sort of stuff you'll have kicking around at home (not unless you are an electrician) so a call to you local friendly spark is what you need.
