Another problem

By the way, I didn't mean you when I said this (assuming you are a builder or involved in building in some capacity) , but the builders who did the work.

So what we are looking at in that photo is the end inch and a half or so of the concrete lintel has snapped off?

It is a crack in the lintel-I don't know if it has snapped off all together as I can't see how deep the crack is.

I wonder if that is really a concrete lintel.

Might be wood with a bit of render or something.

How old is the house?

I can think of absolutely no reason why a lintel would crack in that way. If it has cracked I really wouldn't worry about it, it is not taking any weight in that position. You could cut the end 3 inches off and it wouldn't make any difference.

I think I am starting to understand how the crack happened. Were the builder or structural engineer banging their heads against it by any chance?

Even if the lump to the left of the crack is concrete, are you sure it is part of the original lintel, and not just a gap-filler to the nearest stone/brick? The bit to the right of the crack is symmetrical with respect to the window. I'd be surprised if the lintel had been installed asymmetrically originally.
