Another room thermostat wiring query

Danfoss offer an explanation I have used a few times:

"To overcome temperature overshoot, most bi-metal/vapour capsule room thermostats are fitted with anticipators (accelerator heaters), small electrical resistors wired close to the sensing element. These anticipators warm up the sensor when the thermostat switch closes, causing it to re-open the switch. Their effect is to sequentially open and close the switch, stepping up room temperature gradually to avoid overshoot."

In the USA though I seem to remember them being described as being there for desensitising (or should that be desensitizing?) the thermostat so that it doesn't switch 'on' and 'off' too frequently which is not good for their hot air generating 'furnaces' I believe. Not sure how that would be though, unless they were wired up to work in reverse!
