I'm told that if I paint the outside of my garden wall railings with anti-climb paint I need to put up a warning notice to advise of that. The consequences, as described to me, were simply - "or you could get into trouble" - with no additional clarity.

Why could I get into trouble if someone gets a bit mucky and sticky from climbing the railings on my private property?

Warning signs also have the advantage that they may discourage someone from even trying. I got some on ebay quite cheaply, they are hard plastic and seem durable. You should not apply it where someone innocently walking down the road might accidentally brush against it.

I think what it boils down to, to a cynic like me anyway, is that the law is there to protect criminals at the expense of the law-abiding!

My garden wall, and railings, adjoins a park. Of course, inside that park it is all public space. The closest park walkway to the railings is, around, 3 to 4 metres from my railings, with various trees and stuff like shrubs and boulders in the way... but kids do seem to get interested in peering into my garden. It's not an epidemic... but I find it frustrating when it happens. I don't really want a conversation with some kid that I don't know about "how much my house cost" and "who lives there" and "what my chickens are called". In reality, no-one has any purpose walking a few metres through those trees to hang on my railings unless they're being incredibly nosey.

Conversely, I worry that if I put up a couple of signs then that could encourage more people to come closer, just to see what the signs say...

If the railings ajoin the park and are within a reasonable touching height (less than 8 feet say) then you can't paint them with anti-climb paint, sign or no sign. The fuzz will be knocking on your door within days.
Maybe instead of ouvertly painting the entire railings with anti-climb, you could just kinda flick the paint at them. That way there would be enough paint flecks to irritate anyone who grabs the railings, but enough that you could plead ignorance and claim it's just paint that hasn't dried properly, or dirt and tree resin...

Come to think of it, I guess you could paint them with anti-climb paint, and put up a 'wet paint' sign that never seems to get taken down!;)
