I've bought one of these from ebay and when I put the meter across it it has about 1M ohms resistance whereas I thought it would about 0.5 ohms.

Is the 1M ohms about right?

Yes, the 1M is to prevent significant current from flowing.

You don't really need one for working on PCs.

Normally I don't use a wrist strap working with PCs, just keep touching the metal frame.

Its more to do with handling memory as the room I work in is carpeted.

Never needed it for memory, either.. Hold by the edges of the PCB and you're fine. Most assembled circuits are pretty robust anyway.

Anyway, a wrist strap on its own isn't even all that useful. You need a mat as well, really.
