I might be very wrong but it could be a gate valve (NRV)?
Something like:
https://www.anchorpumps.com/3-4-20mm-brass-non-return-valve
But I would expect it to have an arrow etched on its surface somewhere.
If you give it a bit of a clean, maybe you could feel around the surface for any etched markings?
Also, you may get a much better response if you posed the question in the 'plumbing and central heating' section

Is that one of those dampers to stop the pipes hammering when you turn a tap off?
