Any need for wired CCTV now that we have Ring etc?

    Hi
My cctv system (co axial) is way out of date in terms of quality and smart abilities, actually it has none of the latter.

So many people seem to be using Ring cams and that begs the question whether that means wired CCTV cameras are now obsolete.

My own gut feeling is that I don't want a system that is entirely based on wifi given that the signal can fail, have interference etc.

Indeed, I don't want a system that is entirely dependent on broadband full stop. In summer I lost Virgin media BB for a full three weeks.

Ring cams do have some great features though. The floodlight cam has two way audio, remote light switch on, siren activation etc.

A normal CCTV camera can't do that.

So is the answer to have both? Wired CCTV cameras that record to both a physical hard drive (in case of BB outage) and to the cloud. And in addition a couple of Ring cams at the front/side of house to use their two way audio and siren activation features.

I hope my rambling makes some sort of sense!

Wired cctv will never be obsolete. Don’t get me wrong wireless is good but nothing beats hard wired.

My cctv is to see what’s going on not to have 2 way interaction.

Both devices have there use I don’t have a ring and don’t see me installing one anytime soon but simply to instruct a delivery driver what to do with my package when I am not is the only thing that will push me to get one.

    Ring do hard wired too?

All cameras should be suitable for what you need them to do?

Many wireless cameras refer to coms only and still need a cable to power them up.

Yes, its that communication that is helpful. Not just for delivery drivers but if you were alerted to a scrote on your drive you could tell him the police were on the way without getting out of bed.

I suppose you could have a remote siren in your alarm system but the Ring cam does the whole thing in one package ie trigger lights, siren and give a voice warning all from your phone.

I meant coms not power. So the question is that even with all this Ring stuff (which afaik is all wireless coms) is there still an argument for having a wired (for coms) cctv system? In addition, should you have the data uploaded to a physical hard drive as well as the cloud?

    Cheers

Hard wired is best without doubt, if you do have a wireless system then I would make sure its kept off your own network and uses its own.

    as for should you.

I would work it out like this:-
If cloud storage = best quality of camera capability, then cloud is sufficient.

If cloud storage does not equal best quality of camera capability, then suitable storage for best quality should be added to the system.

I recently went to a computer security show and they used Ring CCTV to show how easy it is for hackers to break into Chinese systems...
They reckon it will be the biggest domestic hacking threat next year due to popularity of ring...
Stick with your coaxial system and add Hik 5MP cams - they are 10 times better than the ring rubbish!! and you wont have uninvited guests
    watching your every move!!
