Hi,

My stone fireplace is 10 years old but looks like it has just been dug up by the timeteam. General dirt, soot & candlewax (i think) from previous owners are the main problems.

I have looked at some clenaing products and but would like to know if any one has tried any? (I don't want to spend £15 on a re-packaged bottle of washing up liquid!!)

Cheers

One I was looking at;
http://www.lime-mortars.co.uk/stone-care/stone-cleaner/degreaser/1-litre

Scrubbing brush & washing up liquid, add a very small drop of bleach.
That will clean it, dont know about the wax though.

Thanks for the replies (donkey stone???) eh?

The link I posted earlier was from a stonemasons called stone-tech.co.uk

"Thanks to its non-aggresive formula this cleaner can be used for general maintenance and will not react with minerals in the stone to form soluble salt as will normal household cleaning agents."

Have you tried the washing up liquid and scrubbing brush trick??

You'll need to wet down your fireplace first or you'll just end up scrubbing all the soot and grime into the stone, also get some protective sheets down so your carpet/floor doesn't end up in the same state.
