Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone here has ever taken on a project involving a Japanese import van like a Mazda Bongo, Toyota Alphard, or Nissan Elgrand and turned it into a proper camper?

I’m based in the UK and looking into doing a full conversion, but I know rust and underbody issues are common with some imports. Curious if anyone’s tackled the job themselves, or used a garage to handle things like welding, insulation, electrics, etc.

Any tips or experiences would be really appreciated just trying to get my head around the process before I dive in!

I'm pretty familiar with the older Mazda Bongo - Ford Freindee - the one with the Ford 2.5 Turbo diesel, permanent 4X4 auto.
Many of these have had some sort of conversion by now and that may be the cheapest way to proceed - the owners club / website is very thorough for all of your needs.
I have to confirm that the build quality of these, both inside and out was superb and service parts are readily available. Coolant level alarms on these are essential as there is a specific filling procedure.
Good luck with your project!
John :)
