Hi All,

Got the keys for new house recently and top of the list of things to look at is the electrics, the previous owner said some of the lights don't always come on when operated so decided to start at the beginning of the line.

Inside the meter cupboard doesn't look to bad to me, could be tidier and I need to trace where the 2 cables that exit into the cavity from the top left go.

For me the consumer unit needs some investigation, there's a cpc without yellow/green sleeve albeit this is a minor issue.

The shower mcb isn't connected (40a mcb on right), I'm assuming that's where the loose black neutral wire once was, this also leaves a loose red wire somewhere out of site too.

The socket ring main mcb on the right has 3 red wires coming from it, this spur will need tracing to find out what it is for.

There's 3 t+e cables exiting in the bottom left corner these just disappear behind the kitchen kickboards, these will need tracing

Is there anything else amiss that I've overlooked?

Thanks
Chris

What strikes me as strange is I only see one 6A breaker. Normally you would expect to see at least two lighting circuits.

Also said 6A breaker looks like it has multiple wires in it, but one of those wires looks weird, it's possible that the person just hasn't removed the sheath from the cable but i'd still want to dig further.

There seems to be more neutral than line wires

Anything wrong? Well, you have a smart meter, but that’s not going to cause your issue.

Only other additional comment to the above is:
Two of the line conductors connected to the lighting (B6) MCB seem to be the old type single insulated and sheathed cables. This smells of a rewire that has only been partially done. It may mean that some of the lighting circuits are not earthed, and that would prevent you from using anything other than plastic or class II (double insulated) switches snd light fittings.
I’m only surmising from a grainy photo. But needs checking.

however, none of this should cause
some of the lights don't always come on when operated
so, find out which lights are affected, and fault find from that end.It could be something simple like dimmer switches not compatible with LED lamps…

Or bayonet cap fittings so old they have lost the spring tension in the pins.

Or loose terminal screws or snapped cores in lightswitches (often happens when switchplates are unscrewed for decorating & left hanging on the cables)
