aquaruis wsher dryer wont spin

I have a hotpoint aquarius washer dryer 1100 (model WD61) which for some reason seems to hae stopped spinning, or doesn't even begin to spin as usual when programme is selected etc.

I did try again last night and it did spin but with a very faulty sounding noise. When the girlfriend tried shortly after is failed to start at all again.

Anyone have any tips as to what to check for?

basically a crackiling like sound. when i removed the cover, as i read a few articles on here about the brushes, to have a look, it appeared that when i disconnected and reconnected the connection going into one of the brushes the machine worked temporarily again. the motor however did appear to have blue sparks coming from it. could this be down to worn brushes and should my first option be to replace these?? the drum can be spun manually.
