Are BG a rip[ off for a new Ch/HW/Boiler system?

Who can possibly answer that except yourself after Bg and a couple of independants have given you a quote?

I can i see there quotes all the tim and they are famously high

I worked for them for many years and have been surprised by how high some are and low other times. I went to a job the other week where a guy had had a ferolli optima installed about 10 years ago, no rads, no flush, prv discharge straight onto cupboard floor, no compartment vents for the bargain price of ........7800 :!: not Bg but his heating engineer mate. I said nothing. There were plenty of boiler swaps by bg last year for 1500. That's all I'm saying, no good asking what a quote might be that is the whole point of getting one.

and no other quote will include a 3 or 5 year servicing and maintenance contract at a reduced rate either.

Usually they are 30-50% more around my way, and although you will get a good job done without any doubt, I feel it is a 'rip off'.

The main advantage with them is usually that they will 'hit' your property with several blokes and do it in one day with massive disruption for a short period, as opposed to a 'one man band' like myself taking longer but the disruption will be less severe.

As nick says they will tempt you with servicing offers but you will get a full 2 year warranty on a new boiler anyway, unless you fit crap like Glow worm, and an annual service is only about £60 + VAT.

Its your money, you takes your choice

Should the words "servicing and maintenance contract" not be changed to "safety/efficiency check & breakdown cover"?

<dons tin hat & runs for cover> :)

boiler warranties dont cover the rest of the system though. and remember if a powerflush was done it is guaranteed for life.

they are more expensive, but thats due to their overheads more than anything else.

like dave says, you takes your chances.

lol i think its now called a yearly safety and maintenance inspection. i dont think modern boilers can be "serviced" in legal jargonese.

ALways worth getting a BG quote. Sometimes they're more pernickety about rules and regs than others. You need to be aware.
Sometimes their quotes are 3 times a local, sometimes much the same.

Also be aware that they try to recruit every newly qualilfied beginner as a subbie, and you might get one of those putting your system in. They tried me, offering £200 for a combi swap and powerflush, expecting it to be done in a day. Shabby if you ask me.

you do have to be careful with their subs. they can be poor. their direct labour on the whole is pretty good.

Not always. They will install a high flow combi on a house with poor incoming flow and then point customers to Water Co when they don't work... surely you would check the minimum incoming flow meets that in the MI's?

I've seen six like this in the past few months, all BG.

Thats probably the fault of the untrained 'suit' who will lie to sell anything.

I did mean their direct labour installers, but did not make myself clear
