ive been having problems with my combi for about 2 years now but now ive no central heating at all and the flame will only stay lit for 20 seconds at the most when i turn the tap on,after which it goes out and the bottom red light comes on.ive tried raising the water pressure, which worked for a while but now even thats stopped working.it seems to cut out when it exceeds 50 degrees and to top it all off its leaking water from one of the nuts underneath the boiler.ive had the washer replaced three times but its failed to stop it.can anyone help me identify what may need replacing as im a girl and dont want to be taken for a ride by the plumber when i get it serviced? thanks

Very few plumbers take people for a ride!

But you need a competent boiler engineer.

Its best to find one by personal recommendation.

If not then do discuss their fees beforehand. I am told that its quite easy to decide if an engineer is knowledgable and has reasonable charges when speaking to them. Those who can clearly explain their charging policy are way better than those who whistle and say about £500.

Only a very few boiler repairs that I have even done have been over £200.

Not a bad statement if you stop and think about it - You have managed to decry well over 50% of the population in one sweeping sentence!!

Second part if you think about it is fairly likley to alienate the very group of people who would have the best idea of your problem. We are not all 'rip off merchants' in fact there are relativly few really but why tar us all in the same vein??

If men were to make any comment against the female of the world we would be told we were sexist. In reality men need say nothing females are quite capable of managing all the derogatory comments themselves, what does 'as I'm a girl' mean or imply??

'im a girl' means ive not a clue about boilers or anything else electrical for that matter.I was taking the mickey out of myself.i wasnt tarring all plumbers but i am aware that there are cowboys out there.take it how you please!
Anyway ive still got original problem except its now worse.Got a plumber in who replaced the pcb.it fixed the hw and ch but reversed the fault lights so that the red lights were on constantly and only went out when there was a problem or we ran out of gas.
On returning from holiday last week, the boilers gone again but this time theres no ignition at all, the lights on the display are constantly on but the fans kicking in.The plumber could only assume it was the pcb again so we sent for another. The newest pcb was fitted today but its made no difference and now even the fan isnt working.Have called the company that supplied the pcbs but theyre claiming that they all work fine and to get my plumber to call them as they dont want to speak to me.Charming!

Is there a chance it could be something simpler than pcb or have i got bigger problems?

you have an ariston, that itself is the problem. These are crappy cheap boilers, save up and get a decent one.

Make sure the correct EEPROM key is fitted to the new pcb, if at all.

Pcb comes with about 6 of them all labelled up.

I do have to say those PCBs are not very reliable but the tip about selecting the correct eprom is probably the cause of the problem if you have a plumber rather than a boiler engineer!

You have also hinted at another part of the problem! Apparently YOU bought the PCB !

Its normal for the boiler engineer to supply and guarantee the part and his repair.

It seems you have selected a muppet who just comes an guesses what might be wrong and then YOU buy the part and he comes and fits it and when it does not work he just looks stupid.

I am sure the total cost of a British Gas fixed price repair would have been cheaper.

My advice to retrieve the situation would be to get a competent boiler engineer who will take ownership of the problem and fix it for you.
