Hello,
I have an electric armoured cable carrying electric from the house. to the Garden shed.
I want to add an outside socket to this cable, what type of connection do I require to do this, do I have to cut into it and make a spur, or is there a coupling that joins onto it and joins up from inside. and how to go about it. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd leave the armoured cable alone and search for another method of putting the socket in tbh.
Installing an outdoor socket is notifiable under part p of the building regs too.

Depends how near the shed or house you want the socket,HOWEVER this would be a notifiable job under 17th ed regs, You could run another cable from the shed or house.

If you want to cut into the cable somewhere along its length, then you need to use a waterproof adaptable box with 20mm knock outs. You will also need 2 pairs of external SWA glands and a waterproof socket. You wire the existing cable into the box using two of the glands, and run new SWA to the socket using the other two glands. If the cable is already at the right height, then you could wire the socket box straight in.

If you haven't made a SWA joint before, then wiring a box into an existing cable is particularly difficult because you have to get the length of the cable exactly right. Plus the cores left in the box will be very short and difficult to terminate.

You need to know the size of the cable and number of cores in order to buy the right glands. You also need to verify the suitability of the cable and its fuse for the intended use.

As outdoor electrical work is notifiable, this may prove much cheaper to have an electrician do for you, as he will get it right first time (hopefully) and you won't be paying notification fees.
