Artex problem

Hello all ,
I live in a very old Spanish house and needed to replace some artex on 2 small walls. The first wall was ok but when i applied the artex to the 2nd one it just didnt seem to take and just ended up peeling off in one long strip. It was like taking a full strip of wallpaper off a wall. Its an old stone house where the walls have been given a coating of sand and cement. Can anybody out there tell me what i can use to make it take ??? Is there something i can coat the walls with ??? To be honest , i'd rather not have artex but it is quite a large house and i aint got the time to get rid of it all just yet.

You could try a mix of silver sand cement and pva mix it up like sandtex paint and paint it on the wall. Leave it for 24 hours and then try to cover it with artex. I hope this is of some help to you. S/S

Thanks for that S/S. I have tried pva on a couple of other walls with mixed results , some small cracks have appeared in the artex but that could be down to the humidity , heat etc , but i will try it again.

I assume this is inside It could be salts, a reaction with the original finish or damp could be a factor; who knows with Spanish properties! Try the slurry mix as SS suggests but ordinary PVA is water soluble & will not bond to damp structures. You could try using waterproof PVA or an SBR sealer instead but it may have only limited durability if there is a problem with damp & you need to sort that out first.

Hi Richard. There was a small damp problem when we first bought the house just over 2 years ago but that has been more or less resolved. It could be a factor though and the waterproof pva could be the next step.

SBR is better than PVA.

Hi Joe.

Only slight problem might getting hold of some SBR over here. Managed to get the pva at Leroy Merlin (Spains equivalent of B+Q) but not too sure if i can get this. I will try tomorrow though. Many thanks.

Sorry for late reply Dazdel , managed to get some waterproof pva and it looks to have worked a treat. Job done. Thanks for your reply though , if ever i need to do something similar in future , i'll see if i can get hold of some.
