Attach vertical length of wood underneath joist?...

Is there such thing that allows for joining a length of wood vertically underneath a Joist, so it would be like a ''T'', I want to support part of a staircase from a joist above, thanks

You can let it up past and nail through. If its a roof space joist then it can extend past the joist and extra braces added.
