Hi folks,

I am renovating my staircase and had to remove the old newel posts as they were twisted, not centre on stringer, and also not square! I’ve removed the bottom one first, and marked up where I need to cut on my new post (assuming everything is plum).

I’ve been a little hesitant to cut anything yet as the original tenon slightly squint (see image below). That photo was taken whilst I held the new post plum so it is quite a bit out. What would be the best thing to do here? I wondered if I could cut the tenon off so the newel post would sit up Against the stringer, then fire in 3 lag bolts through the post and straight into the stringer. I understand this may not be the conventional thing to do but struggling to see another option.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If by tenon you mean tne old upright section of newel check its structural function at mid and top landing, they are generally tied into trimming or other joists

I’m referring to the section of stringer that is mortified out to fit into the newel post. I believe it is called the tenon.
