I want to change the banister on my staircase from planks to spindles.
I've currently taken a wall down that was the next to the landing and have a temporary banister built with CLS. This job was going to wait a little while but I have to decide what I'm going to do now as the surround for the new under stairs cupboard needs to be plastered with the rest of the hall.
As can hopefully be seen from the photos the stringer isn't wide enough to take a base rail for spindles. I was thinking of packing this out with some timbers.
As for the newels. The bottom one just seems to be screwed onto the stringer and is offset, I can wobble it quite severely. What is the best way or replacing this? I'm thinking the stringer must be supporting the staircase and I can cut a replacement newel to sit centrally over it?
The intermediate newel on the landing seems the most problematic. It runs right down the floor and is quite narrow. Cut and zipbolt new in place?
I imagine the top newel is screwed or bolted to the joists and have to investigate further.
Refurbs of staircases like this must be quite common and having not touched a staircase in my life any guidance would be appreciated.
