I've done some research about filling the gap at the back of the fireplace. I've read you can use rubble so I've got some bricks to smash up and chuck down the back but I've also read about using vermiculate, lime, cement and sand. what proportions of which should I use? It's very confusing!

seven sand to one cement, you only need to cap the rubble, which will dissipate the heat , to stop soot falling down behind the grate.
