Going back of topic slightly, the talk of sludge and liquor reminds me of my first job as a water and wastewater engineer. As part of the biological process in a waste water treatment works 'sludge' is the solid mater that was left and couldn't be processed further, it would be collected and dried out and then landfilled.
Among other things that pass through the human body undigested is tomato seeds and it wasn't uncommon to find pretty health looking tomato plants growing out of these piles of sludge.... bugger eating them though!
