Banging noises

I have a 20 year old boiler. Recently when changing from central heating + hot water to just hot water I noticed a severe banging sound from pipeworks after turning on a tap. I changed back to central heating + hot water and now in addition to still suffering severe banging from pipes the radiator (without thermostatic valves) has become in my opinion dangerously hot. Query boiler stat. Note there is water in overflow tank. Any ideas ?
