Basin tap

Hi all.
A bathroom basin cold tap has developed a problem. When I turn it on the water comes out with a bang.
I can turn it a few degrees nothing happens, then suddenly the water comes out with a water hammer like bang. It does it every time. It's an old style tap not a quarter turn.

Fit a new valve ,or treat yourself to new taps if your feeling extravagant

I took it apart and changed the rubber washer. I had some washers from a packet I bought for a garden tap that dripped and they were the same size. I cleaned the seat where the washer sits, put it back together and that seems to have cured it. If it happens again I'll change the taps.
