Have recently installed a new bath/shower mixer tap which is operated by a lever. When lever moved to the bath position water comes out of the shower head & when in shower position it comes out of the taps. (Unit was pre-assembled when it arrived). Is it possible to alter something inside the mechanism to put this right?, or has the whole thing been made incorrectly.

I would take it back to where you bought it from and ask for a replacement as it is not fit for the purpose.
Failing that if you do not want to dismantle get the manufacturers number and ask them for advice.
