Hi All,

I've been lurking on these forums for a while and finally decided to register!

I'm about to refurb my bathroom which was done badly just before we moved in - hence re-doing it unfortunately.

My question is:

Do the walls look okay to tile directly onto, once I have removed the existing tiles, or do I need backer board?. I would need to strip right back to the brick probably then fit it.

Here are images of where the bath sits: https://ibb.co/hEpJAa and https://ibb.co/hMmyAa

You can see the fitter had to use a lot of adhesive in this image, since you can see how deep the tiles are at the edge (which I don't want to replicate): https://image.ibb.co/mxyBVa/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1806.jpg

Background:

Problems with existing bathroom, prompting this work:
  • The sides on the bath are currently tiled, and the sides are not flush with the bath
  • To fit plastic sides on bath I need to pull the it out of the wall slightly (and it's been tiled in).
  • The tiles need to go to the ceiling due to high-moisture, small bathroom.
  • The floor is tiled and needs to be removed in order to fit the bath sides (and the floor has been done badly anyway - holes cut in wrong place etc).
Here are image links for how it looked just before it was done, and now.
