I am trying to remove the cover to a bathroom basin tap. One was already loose (see picture). I think that there is a hew screw holding it onto the spindle but I can't work out how deep and what size the hex screw is. I have tried various sized hex keys without any luck so far. Any suggestions please?

It's not a hex.

And it looks like it has too many points for a Torx or other star driver.

It looks more like the splined connection of a tap spindle.

BTW, when using Hex keys, a metric set and an American set are different.

Torx are all metric, but to avoid annoying Americans are given T numbers. They have 6 points.

1. Assuming the hole with the light shining through it (2nd photo) is the one to access the screw, I would expect it to be an Allen grub screw. They usually need a 2.5 mm or 3mm Allen key.
2. Always put the plug in to avoid losing the grub screw.
3. Even with the screw removed, the handle may be tight on the splines owing to lime-scale build up. Try pouring very hot (not boiling unless a stainless steel sink) water over the handle and pulling firmly.

Sorry yes I meant allen grub screw (the 6 sided). I've tried a couple of keys and I can find any purchase on the screw. I am having to use the shorter side of the key as it is the only side that there is room to use.

Why can't the long side of the Allen key be used ,through the hole in tap head to reach the grub screw in the spline ?
Are your Allen keys in good condition at their ends? Older ,well used ,Allen key ends are sometimes not good enough in short grub screws.

The hole is at the bottom of the tap and it only turns on quarter towards wall. hence, limited space to insert the key.

The photo is of the cold tap which I presume has either been released at some point or not fixed with grub screw. I'm looking to fix the hot tap which is fixed to the spindle via a grub screw.

Show us a pic of the tap you are trying to undo ,not much point in you showing us a pic of some other tap.
