Bathroom thumb turn and release lock

this may be really simple but today I seem to have had a right struggle.

When fitting the above today, I installed my dead bolt quite simply but when it come to the thumb lock I could seem to think straight. The fixing part of the lock that screws to the door comes with no reference points or anything to ensure it is central for the 5mm spindle, I seemed to make a mess of 1 side by it been slightly to low so when the indicator was clipped on it was too tight to work correctly
any tips on where i went wrong? and hopefully what i have wrote makes sense

You need to measure position accurately, the rear of the handle often sticks out into the door so hole often needs to be slightly larger to stop it binding when turning.
