How do these indicators work?

In other words, if it shows 'green' does that mean there is nothing wrong with the battery even if partially discharged or could it show green despite having, for example, a duff cell?

As far as I am aware, these indicators measure the specific gravity of the battery electrolyte - or 'state of charge' so it only tells you how low or high the charge is.
Also, it only measures the S.G. of one cell so it's only a guide at best.
John :)

I always thought it was green - Ok, white - Needs a charge. Black - ****ed!

It has this on the battery (with a red X in the white circle - not sure how that works). It is a Yuasa.
Whilst it is self-explanatory, I just wondered what it would show with a duff cell.
