I was hoping someone may be able to advise us please.

We have a Baxi Bermuda boiler, last week the pilot light on the boiler started to go out for no apparent reason, it took ages to get it to relight. Then it started firing up and then stopping repeatedly. I turned the pilot light off so that I could hoover the vents etc but could not get the pilot light to re-ignite.

I called an engineer who came out and replaced the thermometer, pilot light instantly lit and fired up no problems.

After he left, we discovered that the upstairs radiators were roasting hot but all the downstairs were ice cold. We could feel the pipes coming down the wall downstairs were only getting lukewarm to halfway down the pipe.

We have never had this problem before and we are hoping its something we can fix ourselves as we dont fancy another bill!

Is this just bad luck on our part, or could this problem with the radiators be something to do with the problem we had with the boiler?

Also, when the heating is on full and the boiler fires up, should it stay fired up, or should it be coming on and going off intermittently?

Any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thank you!

Sorry, I also meant to say, we have bled all the radiators, no air just clean cold water. No part of the downstairs radiators get warm, just halfway down the pipes that come down the walls from upstairs.

Why did you decide to bleed rads/

Thats the way to induce faults.

It sounds as if your pump has failed. See the FAQ on testing and spinning a pump.

Bled the radiators as we thought that was why they were cold downstairs.

We have looked at the pump, not exactly sure how freely the fan is supposed to spin, it moves when we flick it, but not freely, it meets with a little resistance then moves. Should it just spin with no effort at all?

Sorry but we have no idea about plumbing issues.
