I'm trying to remove the darned thing...is there a boiler behind or is it simply a well cemented in fireback in the chimney? I want to fit a wood burner but am concerned if I don't remove the Baxi bit I might be heading for an explosion!
Any advice???

You could look for evidence of old pipework once connected to a back boiler. Apart from that, carefully chip away the old fireback to clear the space you need to fit your new woodburner, and see what if anything is behind it.

An explosion of the kind that worries you can only result from the expansion of gases in an enclosed space. An empty back boiler with unsealed inlet and outlet holes wouldn't explode.
