boiler fires up then after a short while goes off then fires up again after about two seconds. This goes on for quite a while. Adjusted potentiometer but did not fix problem. Got family member who's a plumber to have a look but he wasn't sure what problem was (time not long out, a bit inexperienced). Once boiler has been going for a about an hour, problem settles down and appears to work normally.

when was it last serviced and i mean a proper service ?
There's you problem. A good service will sort it.
A plumber would not be a good choice. Call a boiler service company.
