It's practised in many religions. A few of them work hard to hide it.

He appears to have been sacked for not committing an offence (the C PS didn’t pursue the case). It is almost inconceivable that the beeb didn’t know about it then. but chose to do nothing. It was probably about to be revealed by the tabloids (they seem to have the details to hand) so they sacked him to a) avoid embarrassment and b) clear the decks for the new chairman. Probably involves a story sold to a tabloid who have timed the disclosure to cause maximum damage.

Not necessarily. He might have lied on his application.
He might be guilty of bringing the BBC into disrepute.
They might have gone through the proper processes.
There's loads of reasons for his dismissal, if that's what it was.
