I'm having a 3.5m x 4.5m log cabin installed. The treated timber bearers are being supported off the ground (bare earth) with plastic posts.

The posts and the bearers will be in a pit so the structure won't protrude too much above ground level.

The questions is can I fill the pit with pea shingle to about half way up the bearers. Will this interfere with the ventilation of the bottom of the cabin and cause problems or will some ventilation occur through the shingle?
Also will damp be able to rise through the shingles and make contact with the bearers if they are touching?

I'm using pea shingle to stop animals (rats and mice) nesting under the cabin.

Many thanks, John.[/b]
