Hello,

I'm just taking up woodwork and need some advice about choosing wood. I'm looking to make outdoor furniture, the choices seem daunting to me! Could someone guide me in the right direction? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Steve.

Oak or Iroko would be the most suitable for external use, they are both durable hardwoods and readily available. Go for English oak if you are the ecologically minded type.

If you are working with hardwoods don't forget to keep your tools sharp, they will dull very quicky. Before you launch into production, perfect your joints on some cheap timber first. It will save money in the long run, as hardwoods don't always come cheap and mistakes will be expensive.
