Hi can anyone help me please!!!

My dishwasher works totally fine unless we turn it on/off then it trips out the electricity for the whole house. So it has to be something wrong with the on/off button... I'm quite happy using it and switching off at the mains and not using the on/off button but I'm a bit worried it could cause damage if it's a electrical fault. Any help? Thankyou

The on/off switch could indeed be faulty & causing your problem, if a double pole switch opens one leg quicker than the other, it can cause an imbalance that will be detected by an RCD, thus tripping the supply to your whole house if that is the type of consumer unit you have. Switching off at the socket alone once the appliance has finished it's cycle should not cause any damage or be unsafe.
