Toddler has been at the dial and been turning it the wrong way, it now turns freely although does catch to set a program after a couple of turns, but doesn't stop at the end of a program.

Hoping someone will be able to tell me how I can fix this myself

If you look at the spindle the dial pushes onto then you'll probably find it has a semi circular design, look at the inside of the dial and you should see the same pattern, inside the dial part there will probably be a piece of metal that fits into the straight edge of the semi-circular design.

Make sure this hasnt been stripped, you could always glue the piece of metal back in against the straight edge if it wont stay in of its own accord.

Lining up the dial so the right programme is displayed should be done before the dial is replaced, use a pair of pliers or mole grips and turn the spindle until a programme you know engages (drain or spin are the normally obvious ones).

Then just push the dial back on making sure the programme selection is lined up with any mark on the dial.
