best matt varnish to protect waxed mexican corona pine

Hi

I have just purchased a Mexican corona pine coffee table to sit my tropical aquarium on. obviously water and wood don't mix, so would really like to protect the table against splashes etc, the table is just waxed and is matt and I want to keep the matt look I'm thinking varnish is best as it's waterproof and just after a bit of advice.

This looks like the sort of furniture that would suffer really badly from a damp environment,all the joint's in the top could blow appart.

hence my reason for wanting to varnish it, I just want a matt finish hence asking for advice

you can't varnish on top off wax, it could ruin the finish stripping it off
