Best type down lighters

If you want downlights, put in downlights. Don’t think too much into it. You're not lighting an operating theatre!

Experiment with them, put a couple on a flex with a plug top and play around with positionings to see what you think!

But do look into them properly so that if you have them it really is because you want them

You do need to think. You should consider the practical consequences of all those holes in the ceiling. You should think about access to be able to wire them up. You should think about joist spacing and directions, and how they might affect light spacing, location, and ease of wiring. You should think about whether you mind a piercing light if you look up at them. You should think about whether you mind all the shadows and overlapping zones of uneven brightness. You should think about the cost and disruption of removing them if you change your mind. You should think about the effect on the desirability of the property if you're planning to sell soon.

If, fully informed, you want the lights then go for them, but beware of semi-sleepwalking into having them because you've seen a ceiling with no lampshade hanging down and thought "that looks cool".

Plasterers like spotlights in ceilings, or to be precise they like it when the reality of living in the spotlight(s) is discovered and they get the job to repair to holes left when proper lighting is installed.
