Best way to repair this section of the wall?

Any advice on the best way to repair this section of wall. There is a crumbly grey base layer under the original skimmed surface, does this whole section need to go back to brick? I am a complete plaster novice so any help would be appreciated. This wall is eventually going behind a wardrobe so the finish doesn't have to look great.
