So what is it that you are filling in your original floorboards, how old are they I would be inclined to embrace the natural look of them. Is it just one room
It’s 3 rooms and some were spongy so I swapped in some bedroom boards, but obviously the nail holes didn’t line up. And try as I might there are a few gaps. With a sizeable void below one of them I wanted to minimise draughts.
The boards are 100 years old and I’m happy to embrace the aged look, so what you’ve said is making me think twice as I don’t want zebra stripes down the line. Plus it saves me the aggro.
I sanded a couple of rooms ten years ago and filled holes with sawdust and wood glue. They seem okay. Would you have expected the same to happen with PVA?
I used the cordless Makita narrow belt sander (DBS 180), its expensive but I already had it for another job. The sanding belts go down to 9mm from memory so it depends on the gap between back of pipe and skirting. But it will take off the surface stain.
