There is quite a lot of gloss work in the house and my last attempt at decorating wasn't the best  i'm thinking of stripping it back to bare wood and starting again especially the staircase

I'm sure i saw a product on a DIY show that was like a paste and supposedly chemically took the paint off.

Or, is it just better/easier to rub it down slightly and then undercoat and more gloss?

All help appreciated :)

I've used the paste stuff and it's messy. It does take the paint off but not necessarily all in one go. If you have to strip paint, I find a heatgun works a treat - although it's not suitable for lead paint because of the fumes. All the layers come off at once. Get yourself a suitable mask, though and open your windows.
