For analysis, should be air tight.
The right hand one is the exhaust and should be airtight.
Around 2004 there were some problems with tolerances and a few were found to be loose.
If that applies to yours then you could wrap some PTFE tape around the plug or alternatively contact the manufacturers who will post you a metal plug with three rubber seals, a bit of overkill though!
