Admittedly I am late to the discussion but have 2p.....
Always leave about 5' of trunk if you can for leverage. Alternatively with starting point being a flat cut stump you can screw a metpost socket onto the stump and fix in a fat postto pull on.
If the stump is rotten though, not so easy.
Warm up first!
