We back up to a paddock.
The owner had a local farmer in to cut the grass late last year but didn't rake it up.
Today he has pegged 1 meter wide black plastic over the paddock in 3 seemingly random strips.
Any ideas why?
I know, I could just ask him but I rarely see him.
I would use black plastic to warm the soil up before planting in the early part of the year (e.g.like around now for spuds) or to exclude light and kill off anything growing underneath. Is it possible that it's weed membrane that he intends planting through - it's different to plastic in that it water permeable and allows the rain through while excluding light and so keeping the weeds at bay. The position of the strips relative to the rest of the field seems to make any of these unlikely though.
I wondered about silage although it feels a bit late for it, but I don't know enough about the process.
