black sooty stuff

Hi all,
i have just lifted up old quarry tiles from my kitchen and there is this black charcoal stuff underneath. Can anyone tell me what this is and can i expect to find hardcore underneath this ???

Being in Wales, I assume your area was a mining area, if so, it could be pit waste used as a hardcore.
I found similar when I demolished the outside WC, here in Staffordshire.
I suspect that beneath that pit waste will be the original ground.
So, assuming you want a dpm and/or insulation, you really need to dig out the pit waste and relay a proper concrete floor.

BTW, as a query this should be in the Building Forum. Ask the mods to move it for you.
Also edit your double post in Flooring etc forum to just read "Double Post".
It's against the spirit of the forums and the rules.
