black stuff in walls

Hi all,

just in the process of moving house, and I was putting up a mirror etc in the bathroom when out of the wall along with the usual brick dust came all this black stuff, looks rather like soot only not quite as black, anyway it has stained the carpet and wont come off! Can anyone tell me what this is and how to get it off the carpet!!

And it will mostly hoover up, as long as you don't put water or a damp cloth on it.

Once you have got it wet you have washed in into the pile of the carpet, let it dry out and hoover it dry a few times, preferably using as upright with beater bars, it should reduce, when you think you've got out as much as you can, you may as well switch to a carpet shampoo. I think Ozcleen is good.
