Blown fuse?

Before I phone for an electrician I thought I would ask advice that might just save me a few pennies.

When I turned on our kitchen lights the other day, the bulb blew and as a result the downstairs lights have all gone off.

The electric box is old school, not a fancy trip switch one. On investigation I pulled out the two fuses with the white dots and they both fuse wires appear to be intact.

If this is not a fuse problem then does anyone have any simple solutions as to what is wrong.

Any advice would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks

The fusewire may look all right but that doesn't mean it is. You need to test it to be sure, or if you've no test equipment try tugging gently at the fuse wire.
